Best Things to Do in Leavenworth, WA in May

Leavenworth, Washington is one of the best spring destinations in the Pacific Northwest. With blooming wildflowers, mountain views, and a mix of adrenaline and relaxation, May is the perfect time to visit.

I spent a week exploring Leavenworth and the surrounding areas — here are the best things to do, from hiking and whitewater rafting to where to eat and the local spring festivals you won’t want to miss.

Outdoor Adventures in Leavenworth

1. Whitewater Rafting with Blue Sky Outfitters

Rafting down the Wenatchee River with Blue Sky Outfitters was one of the highlights of the trip. The rapids were thrilling but manageable, and the guides were both experienced and fun. If you’re looking for an adrenaline rush in Leavenworth, this is the way to go.

2. Best Hikes Near Leavenworth in May

May is wildflower season in Central Washington, making it one of the best times of year for hiking. Here are some trail options:

Hikes We Did:

  • Olalla Canyon – A peaceful trail with colorful wildflowers.
  • Old Pipeline Bed Trail – Easy and scenic; perfect for a casual walk.
  • Snow Lake Trail (partially completed) – Still snowy but stunning.

Other Recommended Hikes:

  • Sauer’s Mountain – Known for spectacular wildflower blooms.
  • Colchuck Lake – A popular alpine lake hike (may still have snow).
  • Icicle Ridge Trail – Great for sweeping mountain views.
  • Sage Hills – Gently rolling terrain with fields of flowers.

Pro tip: Bring microspikes and check trail conditions on WTA.org before heading out.

3. Ziplining with Leavenworth Ziplines

We booked the 5-zipline tour with Leavenworth Ziplines, and it was such a fun way to explore the forest canopy. The views were beautiful, and the guides made the experience safe and enjoyable. Great for groups or families!

4. Paddleboarding on Lake Wenatchee

Lake Wenatchee is a peaceful and beautiful spot just outside Leavenworth. Paddleboarding here offers a tranquil escape, with mountain reflections on calm water. Rentals are available at the state park if you don’t have your own gear.

5. Leavenworth Alpine Coaster

This alpine coaster is a must-try! It’s a short but fast thrill ride located right in town. Important tip: only body-mounted cameras are allowed — so leave the GoPro pole behind unless it’s hands-free.

Where to Eat & Drink in Leavenworth

Leavenworth’s food scene is both cozy and hearty, with lots of Bavarian flair. Here are some of my personal favorites:

  • Goose Ridge Winery – Friendly staff and delicious wine tasting.
  • Icicle Brewing – A local favorite for craft beer and chill vibes.
  • München Haus – Best brats and mustard bar in town.
  • Rhein Haus – Giant soft pretzels and German classics.
  • Yodelin Broth Co. – Great for warming up with a healthy soup.
  • Argonaut Coffee & Biscuits – A must-stop for breakfast or mid-day coffee.

Don’t Miss Maifest in May

If you’re visiting Leavenworth in spring, try to plan around Maifest, the town’s annual celebration of German spring traditions. Highlights include:

  • Traditional maypole dancing (I even joined in since they were giving free lessons!)
  • The cutest parade ever, the Bernese Mountain Dog parade
  • Local music, artisan markets, and community events

The festive energy brings the whole town together — it’s the perfect way to see some traditional German traditions.

Relax at The Springs Spa

After a day of hiking or paddling, we visited The Springs, a new spa featuring hot tubs, cold plunges, and a cedar sauna. It’s located just outside town and is a great place to unwind and reset.

Where We Stayed: Plain, Washington

We stayed in Plain, WA, just 25 minutes from Leavenworth. It’s quieter, with easy access to outdoor activities and some surprising gems. We stayed at a cabin called the Riverfront Chalet!

Local Favorites in Plain:

  • Plain Hardware Store – Delicious espresso and a great gift shop.
  • 59er Diner – Classic Americana and possibly the best milkshake I’ve had in Washington.
