Why You Should Visit Winthrop, WA

Small towns you have to visit in Washington: A Hidden Gem in the North Cascades

Tucked away in the stunning Methow Valley, Winthrop, Washington, is a charming small town that feels like stepping into the Old West—if the Old West had world-class outdoor recreation, cozy cafés, and breathtaking mountain views. Whether you’re an adventurer, a history buff, or just someone who loves the magic of a small town, Winthrop should be at the top of your travel list.

1. A Step Back in Time

One of Winthrop’s most distinctive features is its Western-themed downtown. The town underwent a makeover in the 1970s to embrace its frontier roots, and today, wooden boardwalks, saloon-style storefronts, and historic charm make it a unique place to explore. Stop by the Shafer Museum to get a deeper understanding of the area’s rich history, from its mining days to its transformation into a recreation hub.

2. Outdoor Recreation for Every Season

No matter the time of year, Winthrop offers incredible outdoor activities.

  • Winter Wonderland: Winthrop is home to the largest groomed cross-country ski trail system in North America, with over 120 miles of scenic trails. The Methow Trails system attracts skiers from all over the world, and fat biking, snowshoeing, and backcountry skiing are also popular options. We tried Fat biking on our trip there and it was so much fun! We were definitely a bit nervous to bike on snow but Methow Valley Sports hooked us up with some bikes and gave us the lay of the land of the best spots to bike! We also noticed that you can go to a public iceskaing session at winthrop rink!
  • Spring & Summer Adventures: When the snow melts, the valley transforms into a paradise for hikers, mountain bikers, and climbers. Nearby North Cascades National Park and the Pasayten Wilderness offer stunning trails, while the Methow River is perfect for rafting and fly fishing.
  • Fall Colors & Wildlife Viewing: In autumn, the golden larches light up the mountains, making it one of the best times to visit. It’s also an excellent time for spotting deer, black bears, and bald eagles in their natural habitat.

3. Small-Town Charm with Big Flavors

Despite its small size, Winthrop has an impressive food scene. Local favorites include:

  • Rocking Horse Bakery for fresh pastries and a cozy atmosphere.
  • Old Schoolhouse Brewery, where you can enjoy a craft beer with a view of the Methow River.
  • Copper Glance, a hidden gem for creative cocktails and small plates.

And don’t forget to stop by Sheri’s Sweet Shoppe for homemade ice cream and nostalgic treats!

4. A Photographer’s Dream

For those who love capturing landscapes, Winthrop is a goldmine. From misty mornings on the river to golden-hour views of the mountains, every corner of this town is postcard-perfect. In the winter, the annual Hot Air Balloon Festival offers a surreal backdrop of colorful balloons against snow-covered peaks.

5. The Perfect Getaway

Winthrop’s remote location makes it feel like a true escape from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. Whether you stay in a rustic cabin, a riverside lodge, or a cozy Airbnb, the peaceful atmosphere and star-filled skies will make you want to extend your trip.

Plan Your Trip

Winthrop is accessible via the scenic North Cascades Highway (Highway 20), which is one of the most beautiful drives in the state. Just be sure to check road conditions in winter, as the pass closes due to heavy snowfall.

While here we stayed at abbey creek inn! It was a great place to stay on a budget. The staff was so friendly and the Sauna was a great place to relax after adventuring all day!

So, if you’re looking for a destination that combines adventure, history, and small-town charm, Winthrop, WA, is calling your name. Pack your bags, hit the road, and get ready to fall in love with this hidden gem of the Pacific Northwest!
